The word written is one of the key tools in the legal profession. Legal writing can be considered as type of technical writing used by judges, lawyers, legislators etc.
in law to express legal analysis, rights and duties. It will take time and practise to master legal writing skills. Here are some tips to enhance your legal writing skills.
1. Think of Your Audience:
Words you written should satisfies the needs of the reader. Documents which symbolize the same research & message might vary significantly in content & tone based on the proposed audience of documents.
You should always keep your audience in mind when drafting any piece of writing.
2. Organise Your Writing:
Organization is one of the important things for successful legal writing. It will be nice to introduce your subject in an introductory paragraph. Use of transitional phrases like “moreover, “however,” “furthermore,” “in addition,” etc. will be better.
Present each paragraph with topic sentence and use headings & subheadings to halt up blocks of text. Organizational arrangement will help the reader to go through your text and it also promotes readability.
3. Simplify:
Most time you might be uncertain about what you meant to say. While you write and rewrite, recollect that nothing is sacred. Avoid complexity and use simple words. Shorten your sentences.
Try to avoid unnecessary legal jargon. Keeping the contents simple is one of the hardest things about good writing.
4. Use of active voice:
Writing in an active voice is far more convincing. Passive voice covers accountability for an act by removing the subject of the verb. Whereas the Active voice tells the reader who is doing the acting and clarifies your message.
5. Write Concisely:
Tight writing is much more fascinating and has a greater impact on readers. Learning to write in a concise and pragmatic manner will takes practice?
Every word that you write must contribute to your message.
Neglect inessential words and shorten complex sentences, remove redundancies and keep it concise.
